Cenotes: As noted above, the owners of Rancho San Isidro report that there are
several Cenotes on the rancho. We have not seen them yet so we are not in a position to
tell you right now what type or how large they are. The photos below are of a cenote on
our listing (in progress) for Rancho Nozcal near Yalsihon, about 20 min. from San Isidro.
It is a large Cenote combination of the cave and open air type, the latter of which
generally appearing like a simple pond but like all cenotes, fed by under ground rivers
originating in Central America and terminating at the Yucahtan coast. The photo on the
left shows our friends standing on the land bridge over the cave part of this cenote. The
photo on the right is from inside one small part of the cave which extends well beyond
what we could see in the cool, semi-darknees of the  fathomless depths of the pool in
front of us. The depth of this particular Cenote has never been determined but is at
least in excess of 100 meters deep. (Please see Wikipedia for more info on these
geological marvels)

The orange machine to the right, is called a
"Picadora" and it is used to chop up whatever
combination of fresh pasture or vegetable
matter to make animal feed in a more
manageable fashion. In this case, the chopped
grasses are shot out of the picadora and directly
through a schute that leads to the feeding
station saving time and labor.  FYI, the
picadora can also be used to prepare any
vegetable matter for composting.
To the left, cattle waiting at the other end
of the feeding trough for the picadora to do
its work on freshly cut, cane-like, "Taiwan"
feed "grass" grown especially for this
purpose. The Taiwan appears more like
sugar cane than any grass. With a little
watering, it grows rapidly and is an
excellent protein and roughage source for
all kinds of animals in addition to cattle. It
is also drought resistant and will continue
growing long after the normal pasture grass
has turned brown and lost most of its
nutritional value.
Deep well. This one man-made but cenotes
can also serve as virtually unlimited
water  sources, depending upon thier type
and location.  The Yucatan benefits from
an abundance of water resources unknown
in most other states. Except for exposed
cenotes and ponds, however, it's mostly
underground so one tends to
underestimate the availability and value
of this abundant yet limited and vital
resource.
The famous Yucatecan stone walled
pastures and corrals: The "Albarada" is
expensive to build today and even more
valuable because of the security it
offers, its resistance to even the
strongest winds, and the fact that it
virtually lasts forever unlike post and
barbed-wire fencing which eventually
rots and rusts and can be breached by a
determined bull of cow. Much of the
annual labor on most ranchos is
maintaining fencing. Not so with the
stone fence or "Albarada" in Spanish
To the left, the traditional,
palapa-roofed Vaquero's
cottage. This one is currently
being used as a second
bodega or storeroom as the
vaqueros live near-by in
Panaba and because of this
particular rancho's location,
security from even petty
theft is almost guaranteed.

By the way, the value of
your vaquero or vaqueros on
any ranch cannot be over
stated.

on the invaluable Vaquero....
This is a fabulous property at an exceptionally low price as the owners  are already
in process of purchasing another property. All the basics are there and with a little
imagination and a bit of an investment of time, effort, and capital we believe that the
potential here is virtually unlimited....
