| This page is and will continue to be a "Work in Progress". It will cover an expanding variety of profitable, and sustainable rural use and development strategies beyond which may currently be the norm and, we hope, will offer some positive and economically viable alternatives to historic practices and strategies which range from out-dated to clearly counter productive and/or destructive to ourselves, our communities, and our planet as a whole. A good place to start may be to have a closer look at what we mean by "sustainability". Wikipedia has an excellent and comprehensive definition available here. It´s important that we are all on "the same page" before delving into the details, especially if the discussion may have some or even a large impact on our, your, and other´s financial and life quality future! We will also be referring repeatedly to our own, in progress, project for Sustainable and Balanced rural development, which is called Maya Neem Farms. The website is listed above or simply click here to go directly to the site. We are not out to "change the world". We are simply hoping to work, live and contribute in a way that makes it a better more healthy place to live for our own generation and for the generations which will follow us. As such we are developing a number of interdependent, self-sustaining, and profitable use strategies which, near and long term, will fulfill the goals we are setting and working with today. We are indeed concerned by Global Warming, and the resolution of the conflicts, controversy, and politics that surround this looming, life threatening issue. We are concerned with the need for water and energy conservation, and the need to not only protect our remaining forests but pro-actively Reforest daunting millions of acres globally which have been denuded or otherwise destroyed. We are concerned with Habitat Preservation, and Restoration. We are concerned with Clean Water and stopping Soil Erosion and that includes a major shift away from petroleum and chemical based fertilizers and pesticides to ones, like organic Neem-Based pesticides that not only do no harm to the environment but in many cases may even help it while it helps us to regain a more natural balance between real human needs and the needs of the planet, our common bio-sphere, which makes our living here possible. We are concerned with Biodiversity and what it may mean to all of us, certainly our children, near and long term, if we continue, as a species, at a pace which virtually insures that we will one day reach Nature's tipping point where not only esoteric or less known species are at risk or become extinct but that point when our own species becomes moribund as well, as a result, many times of our own human activities. Many scientists and lay people alike are already saying that we have reached and passed that "Point of No Return" but we cannot accept that sentence as a forgone conclusion just yet and so will keep on doing the best we can, with the resources we have, to do what we can to help, in small ways, that lean us in our daily lives and activities back, or in the current historical context, forward... toward this sustainable and life supporting "balance" mentioned above. The "throw-in-the-towel" alternative to what we call "proactive living" and working strategies is, for us, simply not acceptable at this point, nor will we live like the proverbial Ostrich, burying our heads in the sand, or live in denial of the challenges we all face, like it or not. We will however simply and personally, do what we can, on a daily basis, to make whatever small contribution we can as we continue to live and learn what life on the planet in the 21st Century really means and holds for the future; a future we all make a contribution to for better or worse. Good luck and best of success to us all! |
| Balance in the Business Let's get down to some specifics shall we? It's All CONNECTED! We all need to make a living and we, as a company, and as individuals, are in the same boat, as it were, as all of our clients, workers, community members and so on. As such, let's begin with some strategies, related to rural development and sustainable land use which we are excited about and which we are doing our best to put to good use on our own land, and in our own projects, while we promote and make available these same profitable and truly...cutting edge...possibilities for our friends and clients. Once again, you may want to check out our sister site which deals exclusively and in depth with these issues (www.GreenPlanetBlueSea.com) and/or our pages on Profitable, Sustainable Strategies for Rural Use and Development. Commercial Reforestation: Neem: The Tree of 40 Cures This is our #1 priority activity as it offers such diverse possibilities for ourselves and our community while also promising to be an incredible profit source, financially, as well as on many other levels. In this case, we are speaking specifically of the benefits to be derived by planting NeemTrees. For a quick intro to the almost unlimited benefits of this miraculous wonder of Nature, please click here to see why we are so excited about the Neem Tree. Also avTilable on our sister site are our Links , Neem Links and Reforestation Links pages for further information on the Neem Tree. There are, of course, many other additional trees to consider for commercial reforestation (including Mahogany, Neem´s "cousin", and Spanish Cedar), especially here in the Yucatan, but after having spent some time with the Neem, we think you will agree that it offers by far a diversity of benefits that few other species can compete with. FYI, and because of it´s medicinal qualities for humans, animals, and ...plants, the Neem is now being used as not only an organic pesticide for cash crops but also as a bug and infestation cure for both the Mahogany and Cedar trees which, from planting to at least year 6-8 are very vulnerable to decimating infestations which can ruin quickly their commercial value and utility. Another lesser known example, the tree called "Chacah" by the Mayans, is a fast growing, "soft" hardwood with clear straight grain which is ideal for carving and so is extremely important to artisans and the tourist industry here in Mexico. FYI, the Chacah as well as Neem, and other species, may receive government subsidies in excess of $8,500 pesos/hectare for growing these trees commercially. The Chacah is also used as "live" fence posts and so helps in agriculture and livestock pursuits. It is also ideal as a living, organic, and virtually cost free "trellis" for the famous and valuable (locally and for export) fruit called "Pataya", by the Mayans. The bark of the Chacah is also very medicinal and is highly respected and valued as a treatment for burns from caustic chemicals and certain poisonous plants. Bamboo: Bamboo, besides being beautiful, possesses a multitude of highly profitable, commercial possibilities still not widely recognized and appreciated. For the Chinese, it is already a $20 billion dollar a year industry with an almost endless number of products deriving from this incredible plant. There are 12 indigenous species in Mexico and the Mexican government and economic planners intend to build and then increase a significant market share in products derived from bamboo. Naturally, there will be significant financial and technical support for the planting of Bamboo as well. Vermiculture, better known as the business of raising Earthworms, is another government supported profitable activity, There are generally two focuses in this pursuit though they are anything but mutually exclusive. One is commercially raising the worms for their production of worm casings and organic humus which is the cleanest, most nutrient rich, humus on the planet. The worms multiply and convert compost and other organic waste into humus at such a rate as to be not only extremely profitable and useful but, in and of itself, one of Nature´s natural wonders.
