Visas, Residency, Work Permits,
      Citizenship,and other Legal Issues
Everyone has an opinion. Our´s is based upon experience and the number one thing you want
to avoid is procrastination. If you are considering buying property here, other than a
time-share or vacation home you will occupy only for a few weeks per year, then by all means
apply for your FM-3 Residency Visa, ASAP. Also, as soon as you are eligible, apply for your
FM-2 Visa which allows you to work legally here in country and which will allow you most of
the freedoms and advantages Mexican Citizens enjoy whether you ever become a citizen or not.

FYI, dual Citizenship is allowed here and also at least for now, still by the U.S. Government at
this juncture so we would recommend getting on track ASAP even if you are not sure what your
eventual goals will be 3-5 years down the line.

This all will be even more important if you intend to do business here which in all likelihood
you will since you may at least considering the purchase of a Ranch, Farm, or other Investment
Property here in the Yucatán.

Also, as we noted earlier, laws and regulations always seem to be evolving here and the
on-going, narrow-minded, often  race-related,  difficulties and bad will being created from the
far right side of the political spectrum in the States is very likely in turn, and over time,
understandably going to have its negative repercussions  upon heretofore generous Mexican
attitudes and legislation vis a vis American immigration status, regulations and qualifications
as they apply to us living, retiring and/or working and making a living in this fair country.
Unless  by some literal miracle at this point, the American public awakens from its coma and
lethargy and takes  back control of their constitution and government from the racist, wackos,
criminals, paranoiacs, and war profiteers running it into the ground, especially over the past
eight years life for Ex pats and even part-time residents here is bound to get more complicated
so stay ahead of the curve and educate yourself regarding your options and responsibilities
with an expert  legal professional (NOT Merida Insider!) or you may find yourself unpleasantly
surprised at some point. . .

Best in other words to get yourself into the process of securing your status here and now rather
than later as it may very well become more of a chore and hassle without substantive and real
changes in attitudes and legislation on the part of the  "Norteamericanos" who, in their
terminal hubris, at this point, show little interest in  recognizing and changing the errors of
their ways viz a viz their neighbors to the south nor in interacting with most of the rest of the
world for that matter....
Your ability to live, function, and do business here is intimately involved with and dependent
upon your Immigration Status. Again, we highly recommend the fully bi-lingual legal services
and council of
Lic. Mauricio A Rojano and Associates who comprehensively handle not only all
aspects of business and real estate law but also specialize in Immigration Law, the majority of
the partnership having worked within, and continuing to interface with the Department of
Immigration.

The following information is largely anecdotal and no way is intended to replace professional legal services or
council. If you have legal questions, especially as a person visiting or planning to immigrate to a foreign
country, make sure that you seek out the most professional and experienced legal  services available. In
Mexico, in most cases,  you will find that your foreign currency will go a  lot farther than where you came
from so don´t try and save a buck going in because we can almost guarantee that skimping for legal services,
like skimping on medical care, will almost always cost you more in one way ...or potentially many others...in
the long run. For your convenience, we have provided below the contact information for our attorneys not
because we stand to gain anything from doing so but because they are simply the best and most consistently
professional providers that we have encountered in the 6+ years we have lived and worked here.

We wish you a successful and mainly hassle-free experience as you learn the ins and outs of functioning in
this marvelous country and culture. Best regards from your friends at
